Tips on choosing the music for your wedding

The first choice is, do you want a band or a DJ? The advantage of a band is that you get to see those who are creating the music, and the activity of a band creates an air of excitement. The dis-advantage is that most bands are not able to go from a country song, to a big band song, to a top 40 song. Plus the whole nature of a band is that they want the attention, instead of keeping the attention where it should belong... on the couple who's wedding it is. Also with bands, they play for 20 to 40 minutes and then take a 10 to 20 minute break. Bands have a tendency to play very loud which makes it hard for your guests to talk during the dinner and mingle time. With a band, you will also need to hire a wedding coordinator since most bands do not MC your wedding, making sure that everything follows your pre-defined plans.

With a DJ you get the music just the way the original artist recorded it, you can get more variety of music and most DJs don't take breaks. The biggest advantage of a DJ is that DJs cost less than bands. Most DJs can MC your wedding, making sure that everything you want to have happen.... does. Also a good DJ will keep the spot light on the couple and not on him/herself. Most DJs have equipment designed to fill the room with good quality sound (using an equalizer) yet not drown out the conversations of your guests.

When you choose a DJ, make sure to get a comprehensive list of the selection of songs he/she carries. You should also be able to pick and choose some of your favorite songs and artists. If you have any songs that you don't want played at "your" reception, you should be able to give the DJ a list of those songs.... after all it IS your wedding day. You should also inquire about the equipment that the DJ uses. A good DJ will have "road worthy" equipment that can take the beating of being moved from location to location and still produce clean quality sound. The equipment should have a clean look to it. One of the worst things a DJ can do at a wedding is bring dirty, beat up equipment into a room that you have worked so hard to make elegant.
